Debate: Should Intelligence Tests be Used in the College Admissions Process and Hiring Decisions

The debate topic today in class seems to be a discussion colleges are constantly having. Some colleges (such as Etown) allow for you to waive your SAT scores while other colleges require your SAT scores. The article we read by Kuncel & Hezlett show evidence that SAT scores and college success are correlated. I don't disagree with their findings but I think the SAT cannot test a person's entire intelligence. The SAT only tests a person's reading, math and writing. While these skills are important they may not be applicable to a person's major or career choice. Personally I do not do well on standardized tests. So if someone only looked at my SAT scores they would not see all of my knowledge. My high school was very rigorous and competitive with an advanced curriculum whether in AP or College Prep classes. Even though I complained about the work load and the difficulty while in high school I was extremely prepared for my first year of college.
Jenni and Anastasia brought up a good point about self-fulfilling prophecies. If a student thinks they are not going to do well they most likely will not. I think determination and motivation are important in determining a person's success. If a person is motivated they are more likely to work harder to reach their goals. I think that motivation is a necessary quality of students and employees but is not captured by standardized tests.
