Multiple Intelligences Debate

The theory of multiple intelligences or one intelligence has been an ongoing debate. The debate today in class raised some good points on the issue. The affirmative team provided interesting evidence. They discussed the Rainbow/Kaleidoscope Project. They were used to supplement the SAT and other standardized tests. The tests showed that there are multiple intelligences that can be tested. I thought this was good evidence to support multiple intelligences. It was research that I had never heard of so it was nice to hear different research. This showed application to a real life situation. The topic of nature vs. nurture came up during the debate. Even though this was not the topic I think it was important to touch upon because a person's environment can have an influence on how they learn.
The negative team also had strong points against the theory of multiple intelligences. I think that a person has an underlying intelligence that can increase with a person's experiences. The factory analogy was also a good way to think of "single intelligence."
Overall I think the debate was an interesting and a good learning experience.

  1. I think the debate on Monday went well too! I know all four of us put in a lot of work into the research. Though it was not planned, I am glad the topic of nature vs. nurture came up , because I think it is an important factor in intelligence. I think this debate will lend nicely into the other topics we will be discussing in class.

  2. I agree with Maddie, the debate on Monday had some great points from both sides. I did enjoy the affirmative side's points on application and intelligence should take into account problem solving in real life situations.
